Reading #10 – Reflection on Vandana Shiva

While reading Vandana’s Shiva’s What Is Biodiversity and Why Is It So Important I was fascinated by all the opinions she has acquired about the ecosystem. I was not quite sure what biodiversity meant when I first started reading; however, in the first paragraph of the article it was explained to me. It is the diversity of life and it provides the conditions for the life’s emergence and maintenance. I completely agree with all of Shiva’s premises. The first section that really stood out to me was The Wealth of the Poor. She states that the poor use biodiversity for food and medicine, for energy and fibre, for ceremony and crafts. I never thought about the fact that as biodiversity disappears the poor are deprived of healthcare and nutrition they receive from biodiversity. I also strongly agree with the fact that people in our country are only thinking about the present and not into the future. I believe that Shiva’s statement about organic farming being better for us because it contains less harmful chemicals is very true. The last premise that stood out to me is the empty earth syndrome. This syndrome talks about how modernized societies whose ecosystems have not been taken over by Western industrial man are empty. Our societies are too busy building new things instead of refurbishing old things. The empty earth syndrome threatens species of extinction because we are blind to their existence. Shiva’s premises are very logical and accurate to the way I think.
